The diameter of a basketball hoop is required to be 18 inches, and this is uniform for all courts everywhere around the world. A full-sized basketball needs this much space to pass through the hoop without getting stuck, and this diameter never changes.

That’s quite the change when you consider the size of the ball itself. A standard basketball is 9 inches in diameter. That means with the new hoop, players will only have 1 inch of wiggle room left. This amount of space is quite a bit less compared to what players have been used to so far.
The distance from the gym floor to the rim is 10 feet. This rim height is the same for Junior High, High School, NCAA, WNBA, FIBA, and the NBA. Some kids’ leagues will lower the hoop to 8 feet or 9 feet to acknowledge that younger kids have difficulty shooting at 10 feet high hoops.
Backboard sizes vary in width from 48” wide all the way up to 72”, but for the sake of regular game play we recommend choosing backboard no smaller than 54” wide. Anything narrower than this measurement won’t allow the player to perform bank shots at all!
